Booklet To Help Older Tasmanians Stay Active

Tasmanian Minister for Community Development Michelle O’Byrne has launched the What’s Happening in the North? booklet, a publication that lists sport and recreation opportunities for older adults in northern Tasmania.

Speaking at the Trevallyn Bowls and Community Club, Ms O’Byrne said there were many reasons why it is important for older adults to keep their bodies fit and their minds active.

“There are so many benefits to be had, social and economic as well as the obvious health benefits, that come from keeping active and fit as you get older.

“The What’s Happening in the North? and What’s Happening in the North West? booklets encourage people to rediscover a favourite pastime or try something new, but most importantly, to get out and give something a go.

“There is something for everyone - from gentle exercises such as tai chi and more intense exercise options like cycling and orienteering.

“They also include activities such as scrabble, chess, mahjong and bridge, and information on how to be involved in organisations such as School for Seniors, community health agencies and Volunteering Tasmania.

“These books are very handy to have around as an easy reference and I encourage anyone in the area to pick one up and choose something to try.”
Books can be found at local council offices and State Libraries.
