Magnet Misuse Causing Medical Mayhem
QLD Office of Fair Trading

Queensland Minister for Fair Trading Margaret Keech has warned parents to be aware of the dangers associated with toys containing small magnetic parts.

"Popular magnetic building sets have been linked to injuries and deaths here and overseas," Mrs Keech said.
"Each set can have more than 100 magnetic rods and balls that are quite small, making them easy for children to swallow.
"Magnets pose a very serious risk and if swallowed can cause horrific injuries.

"If two or more magnets are swallowed, they can attract each other in the intestine and cause serious internal damage which requires immediate corrective surgery.

"Toys with magnetic parts should be considered carefully and parents are urged to follow age recommendations on product labels when buying any toy.

"Parents should also supervise their child during playtime to minimise the chances of a serious or even fatal injury.
