New Zealand Ahead of Australia On Emissions Trading

The New Zealand Government has announced plans for an Emissions Trading Scheme aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting environmentally friendly behavious and creating business opportunities for New Zealanders.

Apart from an Emissions Trading Scheme, the plan will incorporate measures to encourage forestry and more sustainable land use.  Hopefully this will see farmers compensated for introducing measures that help the environment.

Renewable electricity generation is to be increased to ninety percent of New Zealand’s total by 2025.  There is to be an improved fuel and energy efficiency in buildings, homes and businesses.  The public sector is to be carbon neutral and emissions from the transport sector are to be halved by 2040.

New Zealand is to be congratulated on introducing real targets that will help the international fight against global warming.
