Providing Care for Animals In Need

Animal Welfare League NSW prides itself on our corporate policy to provide care for animals who are in need, to achieve this we have a range of services which is the League's way of providing a legacy to the future of our animals.

Our many services include:

Legacy House
Guardian Angel Program
The Orange Grove
AWL Accredited Courses
Subsidised desexing programs
The Emergency Card

Legacy
For those animals when their owner dies, our Legacy Program usually only provides for cats, although in some special cases, dogs are considered.

Owners can direct Animal Welfare League NSW to take guardianship of the pet's life or to find it another caring home. If more than one pet is involved, they may stay together if it is in the best interest of the animals.

Those seeking the services of the League are encouraged to be as generous as they can afford with the amount of money they bequeath in their Will for the care of their companion animal.

Our Legacy Program is a fine example of helping animals in a time of difficulty or stress.

We have a family of feline's at the West Hoxton Centre who will spend the rest of their natural lives in the care of our dedicated staff.

Many visitors to the Centre are often heard saying 'If there is a life here after, when I come back I want to live in Legacy House'.

Guardian Angel Program
Our Guardian Angels have helped some of God's most cherished creations by assisting them in providing housing and care for various animals who, for reasons such as species, age or disability, are unable to find new homes. It also gives new meaning to the lives of people who long for a pet of their own, but for whatever reason, are unable to keep one.

Similar to a sponsorship program, caring people donate a specified financial contribution towards maintaining an animal at the West Hoxton Centre for the rest of its life. In return our Guardian Angel's are granted their wings, given a photo and history of their sponsored animal and an invitation to visit any day throughout the year.

We now have Guardian Angels for horses, sheep, goats, cats, geese, cockatoos, rabbits, and chickens.

To find out how you can become a Guardian Angel, contact our West Hoxton Centre on 02 9606 9333.

The Orange Grove
Another service the League offers is managing the loss of a beloved pet, we can provide a place of rest for your pet in the grounds of our West Hoxton Centre.

The Orange Grove was consecrated in April 1997. Here, there is a place available for your pet's ashes to be interred in the niche wall or in the garden amongst the sights and smells he or she understood so well.

The League's service includes: the collection of the pet's body from the owners home or veterinarian, the cremation and the return of the ashes to the League and interred in the niche wall or garden, sealed by a plaque inscribed with words of your choice. Farewell services can also be arranged to take place in The Orange Grove.

Many of the League's members and friends take the opportunity to lay their pets to rest in The Orange Grove where they can be assured their ashes are kept at peace and out of harms way - forever.

The League believes that a memorial wall and garden is vital for companion animal owners who have been extremely attached to their pets. The Orange Grove helps bring a sense of closure and assist with the grieving process. Whatever your wishes, the League understands your feelings as we have identical attachments to our own animals.

AWL Accredited Courses
Microchip Implanters Accreditation Course

It is a requirement of the Companion Animals Act 1998, that all dogs, cats, puppies and kittens be microchipped for permanent identification. To conform with this ruling all dogs, cats, puppies and kittens adopted from the League are microchipped from 8 weeks of age.

We also go one step further by facilitating the Microchip Implanters Accreditation Course.

The training program was developed by the League and endorsed by the NSW Government as an accredited teaching facility.

In the last financial year the League conducted 4 Implanters Courses of which 36 students enrolled from a variety of metropolitan and regional centres throughout the state. Students are required to undertake a practical component of the course under the supervision of a qualified veterinarian. Of the attendees, 23 were successful in graduating and receiving accreditation.

Animal Welfare League NSW is fortunate to have the skill and expertise within our staff unit to facilitate and conduct courses such as the Microchip Implanters Accreditation Course.

Subsidised desexing programs
Do you need assitance to desex your pet?

A number of Animal Welfare League NSW's branches have subsidised desexing programs which have been put in place to assist those members of our community who need help with the costs of desexing their pets.

There are several benefits of why you should have your pet desexed:

• Prevent Unwanted Litters
• Cheaper Council Life-time registration
• Reduces the risk of breast cancer, and prostate problems in males

The Emergency Card
The Emergency Card is exclusive to members and is a permanent card that contains an identity number which is linked to a privacy protected database containing the details of member’s pets to ensure they are looked after by the League in case of an emergency or accident that prevent the owner to care for their animals.

Chloe (pictured right) joined the League's feline family at the West Hoxton Centre following the passing of her companion owner. Chloe had an Emergency Card which meant that her friends and relatives were able to contact the League immediately to arrange accommodation for Chloe during this time of stress.

The Emergency Card provides companion pet owners with the reassurance that their animals will be looked after should an accident occur.
